Understanding Common Scams
Know the tactics. Recognize the red flags. Protect yourself and those around you.
The Channels Scammers Actually Use
Fraud does not wait for you to click a link — it arrives on the apps and tools you use every day.
SMS & SMS Smishing
Delivery, bank, and OTP scams arrive as short texts with urgent links and spoofed sender IDs.
WhatsApp & Telegram
Job offers, task scams, and romance fraud live on messaging apps where scammers hide behind private chats.
Email Phishing
Fake invoices, account-suspended notices, and login alerts ask you to re-enter credentials on lookalike portals.
Calls & Tech Support
Fake agents claim remote-access "help" to reach your banking screens, gift cards, and passwords.
Social Media DMs
Influencer fake giveaways, deepfake video calls, and investment group invites pull victims into plots.
Browser Pop-Ups
Loud, full-screen "your PC is infected" alerts push fake toll-free numbers and remote-desktop tools.
Build Your Defense — Daily Prevention Habits
The scammers above all fail against the same handful of habits. Adopt these and you take most of the fraud out of the equation.
- ✓Never trust "urgency" — legitimate banks and couriers do not demand instant action with threats of account deletion.
- ✓Always type the official website URL yourself instead of clicking links in messages.
- ✓Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) everywhere it is offered.
- ✓Verify unexpected calls by hanging up and calling the official number on the back of your card.
- ✓Never pay "release", "advance", or "customs" fees to unlock money or a job — that is always the scam.
- ✓Run anything suspicious through Scam Check before you click, share, or send money.
